2002 Nebraska geologic Field Trip
Itinerary
The below is the plan, but it will likely get changed a bit.
In addition, to the major stops listed below, we will make others.
Monday June 21st
- Start packing vehicles by 8:30 AM at loading docks. Leave
by 9 AM.
- Geologic stops:
- Fort Calhoun terrace.
- overview of quarry in Paleozoic
- Ft. Gavins Dam
- Ogallala strata
- Niobrara State Park
- the new delta
- Niobrara chalks
- Pierre shale and the big slump
- Obtain food and supplies at Crofton.
- Camp at park.
Tuesday June 22nd
- Geologic stops:
- Ash Fall fossil beds
- Spencer Dam
- Fort Falls
- Valentine Wildlife Refuge
- Food and supplies obtained in Valentine.
- We will camp either near Valentine or at Meritt reservoir
to the southwest in the Sand Hills.
Wednesday June 23rd
- Geologic stops:
- Merritt Reservoir
- various stop in Sand Hills
- Niobrara River valley
- Hudson Meng Bone Bed
- Obtain food and supplies at Crawford, Nebraska.
- Camp at Toadstool Geologic Park
Thursday June 24th
- Geologic stops:
- Toadstool Park
- Agate Fossil Beds
- Scotts Bluff
- Ash Hollow
- Obtain food and supplies in Bridgeport.
- Camp at Lake McConaughy
Friday June 25th
- Geologic stops:
- Gang plank surface.
- Lake McConaughy dam.
- Dakota sandstone near the last crossing of the Platte.
- Lunch at Ole's
- Drive back along the thruway to Omaha, back by circa 10PM.
