Labs are opportunities to learn by experience. In this lab you will learn how to identify minerals and rocks, how to work with maps, how to recognize and understand the landscape and landforms you see, how to construct geologic histories, and how to use geology in environmental endeavors. Don't hesitate to ask questions and enjoy!
The laboratory for the Physical Geology course is a self-paced lab. You may attend the lab during any of the 18 hours of lab scheduled each week. You must register for and attend the lab. The lab portion of the course constitutes 25% of the final grade. Each week's lab will typically take 2-4 hours to complete. If you are on a tight schedule (as many are), reading carefully each week's chapter in the lab manual before arriving at the lab can greatly reduce lab time. The lab procedures are described in the beginning of the lab manual. You should read this carefully before you come to lab. Teaching assistants will be in the lab when it is open and will attempt to answer any questions you may have. You may take a quiz on each unit up to three times to improve a poor grade, but you may not take more than one quiz in a single lab period. Each time your repeat a quiz the maximum score possible decreases one letter grade. It is to your advantage to complete the unit as early in the week as possible.
Each week one unit must be completed, except for the first lab for which you have 2 weeks. The quiz for each unit must be taken by Friday afternoon of that week. 12 of 14 labs will count towards your lab grade. The lab holds a maximum of 20 people. There will be a first come, first serve policy.
The teaching assistants for the lab are Mr. Aaron Quinn and Ms. Julie Holtz. These two individuals are experienced, with significant background.
Lab hours TBA (these hours may be changed some in the first 2 - 3 weeks):
Limited tutoring is available for those who need it - ask your instructor.
