Omaha's urban environmental landscape.

Each group will be given an air photo of some part of Omaha to work with. Use it to help you answer the following questions.

Visually estimate what percentage of your area is paved over, or built over, so that storm water can not seep into the ground.

Identify all the areas dedicated to machine space by outlining and labeling with M, and estimate the percentage of that area.

Identify all green or wetland spaces where natural bioremediation of surface waters might take place by marking with a G. What percentage of the landscape do they cover?

Identify possible major point sources of contamination and label with PS. Use your knowledge of Omaha to do so.

List possible non-point sources of significant contamination evident in your area.

Identify sites where the surface material is primarily fill, or is very likely highly disturbed from its natural state(excluding the land immediately underneath roads and houses) and mark with a F.

Outline any floodplains where you think there is the potential for flooding. Describe and storm water (flood) management structures in your photo.

Finally, which of the elements above would you like to see reduced in size or extent, and which would you like to see increased? What would be mechanisms by which these changes could be accomplished?
