Week 3-Field Trip

We will meet at the University of Nebraska Agricultural Research and Development Center south of Mead, Nebraska. I would suggest carpooling. If anyone needs a ride let me know. It will take you about 40 minutes from UNMC or the City Campus of UNL to reach the site. We will meet there at 6 PM. I know that might be a bit early for some of you but we pretty much lose usable light at 8 PM so I would like to have you on your way home by then. If you get lost or need to get ahold of me call my cell at 402-305-8672. I'll leave the phone on after 5 PM. Don't leave a message as I can't access my voice mail

Clothing--I don't know what the weather will be like but in any case I would wear comfortable shoes that can take a little dirt or mud. If flies or mosquitos or ticks bother you (they really aren't excessive here) dress appropriately or apply your favorite chemical.

Directions from Omaha--Go west on State 92 (extension of West Center Road). You will pass over the Elkhorn and Platte Rivers, and pass just south of Yutan. Go on about 3 miles past Yutan until the topography flattens out (Todd Valley). You will pass over a railroad track and about a half mile beyond that come to an intersection with a gas station on the north and a convenience store on the south. Turn left (south) down that paved road. I think it is marked as a state highway spur but is also known as Saunders County 10. Go south on this road. You will pass the feedlots of the Mead Cattle Company on the east beyond a windbreak. You may get lucky if they have sprayed effluent on the fields which were recently harvested. After about 5 miles you will come to an intersection with state highway 63. Go left (east) on that for about 300 feet and turn right(south) on a dirt track and follow that for about 600 feet. The road is passable in all weather. If you don't want grasshoppers in your car close the windows

Directions from Lincoln--Go north on US Hwy 77 past Ceresco and you will come to a small community called Swedeburg. About a mile beyond that turn right on State Highway 63 (paved ). I think a sign will say Ithaca or Ashland. If you enter Wahoo you have gone too far. Go east on 63 about 5 miles. You will pass the Saunders County Extension Building on the right (south) and soon thereafter pass some cattle pens and buildings on the right which are part of the ARDC. At that point a paved road will come in from the north (County 10). About 300 feet past the intersection go off to the right (south) on a dirt track and about 600 feeet after you turn we will meet. Road is passable in all weather. If you don't want grasshoppers in your car close the windows.
