Make a Classed and an “Unclassed” (999 Classes) Map using QGIS

 

1.

  1. Download us_electionmap
  2. Download us_state_outline file. This is used only to provide a state outline for the county map. Make inside of states transparent.

  • Unzip the us_electionmap folder.  Open QGIS and Drag the us_electionmap.shp into your data window.
  • Unzip the us_state_outline file. Drag the file to your data window. Remember to make the inside of the states transparent in the Properties dialog.

Set the CRS.

Š    Right click the us_electionmap layer and choose “Set Layer CRS”.  Make sure your coordinate system is WGS 84.

Š            Go to the Project menu and click “Project Properties”.

Š            On the CRS menu, check “Enable ‘on the fly’ transformation”.

Š            Search “albers” and choose the “USA_Contiguous_Albers_Equal_Area_Conic” projection and click apply.

4.

Style/symbolize your Classed Choropleth Map.

 

Š            Right click your us_electionmap layer and click properties.

Š            On the style tab choose Graduated .

Š            For the column choose either perClinton or perTrump. (These are percentages of the vote that the candidates received.)

Š            Click Classify and choose either Equal Interval or Quantile for the classification mode.

Š            Choose an appropriate color ramp.

Š            Set to 5 classes. 

Š            Check the invert box and make sure that the darker color is listed at the top and sort to ensure largest values are at the top.  Click Apply and OK.

5.

Create your Map Layout

 

Š            Click the zoom  and draw a box around the contiguous U.S.

Š            Go to Project>New Print Composer.

Š            Name your print composer.

Š            Click the add new map icon and then drag a box into your print composer view.  This will place your map into the print composer.

Export

 

  • Export as a pdf
  • These PDF files can be edited by Illustrator.

7.

Hawaii and Alaska

 

Hawaii and Alaska need to be projected appropriately.

Š            For each state you will want to change the projection. Refer to step 3, and use the Albers Equal Area projections for each state. 

Š            Refer to steps 5 and 6 to layout Alaska and Hawaii and export each as a pdf.  You should have 3 pdfs at this point.

8.

Add Legend

 

Š             Add a legend in the print composer. Export the legend.  Now you should have 4 pdf.

 

 

9.

Style/symbolize your Unclassed (999 Classes) Map.

 

Š            Right click your us_electionmap layer and click properties.

Š            Choose the same classification method.

Š            Use the same color ramp as before.

Š            Set to 999 classes. 

Š            Double check the invert box and make sure that the darker color is for the largest values and the larger values are listed on top.  Click Apply and OK

10.

Create your Map Layout

 

Š            Click the zoom and draw a box around the contiguous U.S.

Š            Go to Project>New Print Composer.

Š            Name your print composer.

Š            Click the add new map icon and drag a box into your print composer view.

Export

 

Š            Export as a pdf

12.

Hawaii and Alaska

 

Š   Project Hawaii and Alaska Appropriately with their Albers Equal Area projections.

Š   Refer to steps 5 and 6 to layout Alaska and Hawaii and export each as a pdf.

 

13.

Create a 10-class Legend

 

Š     Refer to Step 4. Select 10 Classes. Use the same classification system you used with 999 classes.

Š             Add the legend in the print composer. Export the legend.

We're using this legend because it is impossible to incorporate a 999-class legend on the map.

 

 

14.

Final Layout

 

Bring all the elements into Adobe Illustrator for the final two-map layout. Add titles, your name, and classification systems used. Follow cartographic design and visual hierarchy principles. Incorporate distinctive design elements that were used in the previous assignment.

 

 

Save as PDF

The PDF file can very large so it is important to choose some options in the save dialog to make it smaller. One option that will reduce the file size is to disable the ability to edit the file in Illustrator. When you select this option, remember that your Illustrator file that will be editable.

Also, choose "Downsample to Average" in each of the three available areas.
