Where is Armenia?

 

Armenia is located just East of Turkey and North of Iran at 40°N and 45°E. The surrounding land is characterized by mountain ranges, some forests, and good soil for agriculture. Armenia has a continental climate.

Major Cities

 

Here we see some of Armenia’s major cities. Yerevan is the capital, with a population of 1,088,000 as of 2004. This is just under a third of the total population, because Armenia’s current population is estimated to be 2,971,650 (2007).

As mentioned earlier, this area is characterized by mountain ranges, including the Armenian Highland, Mount Aragats, Dar-Alages, the Geghama Mountains, Niphates, Porak, Tskhouk-Karckar, and the Zangezur Mountains.

Armenia has a mostly continental climate, meaning that is changes more rapidly than an area which is kept fairly constant by the moderating effects of the ocean. Armenia receives the most precipitation annually in a strip that runs through the center of the country.

Physical  Landscapes

Geographic Regions of Armenia

 

The northern part of the country is characterized by the folded mountain ridges of Minor Caucasus. Along the North-Eastern border we find volcanic highlands. The Southern part of the country holds the Sub-Arax mountain ridges. Along the South-Western border is the Ararat Valley.

Altitude Variations

 

Consistent with the precipitation of Armenia, the highest points in the region run in a diagonal strip through the center of the country. The region is very mountainous indeed. The highest peak in the country is Mount Agarats, standing at 4,090 meters high.

Forests

 

The region has some forested area, concentrated mostly in the Northern part of the country and around lake Sevan. A concentrated area of forest can also be found along the southern tip, where many rivers run closely together.

Types of Soil

 

Various types of soil can be found in Armenia’s rich landscapes. The mountain brown soil, found near the South-West border, is beneficial for agriculture. Irrigated meadows can also be found along this border.

Wetlands

 

The largest body of water in Armenia is Lake Sevan. However, many rivers flow through the country and many wetlands can be found concentrated along the South Western border. The vast series of rivers allow for plenty of fishing areas and hydro-electric power stations to be productive.

Mineral Resources

 

Many natural resources can be found in Armenia, including iron ore, copper, aluminum ores, marble, limestone, and granite. Rock salt can be found in the interior of the country, and lead ores can be mined in the north.

Geological Map

 

Here we can see what time eras the minerals in the era can be dated back to. The oldest areas are near the interior of the country, and the newer areas seem to be closer to the south. Jurassic-dated regions can be found in both the north and the south.

Plant and Animal Life

Vegetation and Habitat Types

 

A vast array of vegetation can be found in Armenia. Near Lake Sevan, we find much newly formed vegetation. Most of the inland part of the country is characterized by grass-steppes. Running though the center of the country, one can find meadow-steppes. Along the South Western border, and near the Southern tip of the country, desert-like conditions exist.

Threatened Species


Distribution of Some Threatened Reptile and Mammal Species in Armenia

Most of the wildlife in Armenia is concentrated in the Southwestern region. Wildlife can also be found near Sevan Lake, near the southern tip, in the north, and everywhere in between. Mammals and reptiles both exist in Armenia.

Armenian agriculture is concentrates along the southwestern border, where the mountain brown soils exist, as noted earlier. Much agriculture is also found in a circular pattern around the meadows just north of the southwestern border. Lake Sevan also aids in agricultural needs.
