The Landscape

Mountains

This is a photo of mountains in northern Thailand. Notice the winding road running through the valley. Northern Thailand is a land of mountains, waterfalls, and forests. It is also the land of the golden triangle. The golden triangle is one of the major opium areas in the world. The mountains make the fight against drugs difficult.

Low Lands

This is a photo of a rice field in the Petchabun Province in northern Thailand. It floods during the rainy or typhoon seasons. The typhoon season brings on much destruction and even massive deaths due to flooding, mud slides, and disease. It also brings massive amounts of rainfall, that make rice growing possible.

Coastal Regions

This is a photo of a cove along the coast of Thailand. There is more than 2500 kilometers of coastline in Thailand. The two main resort regions are on the east and west coasts of the Gulf of Thailand. There are also island resorts on the southern islands. Notice the heavy vegetation, even on the step rock cliffs.

Urban Areas

A Bangkok Traffic Jam

This is a photo of a traffic jam in Bangkok. The road is the Sukhumvit Road. Traffic is a major problem in Bangkok. It frustrates divers and increases pollution. To help this problem, the government is building an elevated, mass transit system (upper right). Notice the motorcycles weaving through the traffic.

An Open Air Market

This is a photo of an open air market. It is located in the town of Prachuab Khiri Khan. It is a fruit market. Thailand, like many tropical countries, is well known for its many fruits. The markets also give each town a meeting place and are a social gathering place.

A Thailand Toilet

This is a photo of a typical toilet in Thailand. You would do your business in the hole in the ground, then you would use the yellow bucket to flush with the water on the right. As you can tell, it is very different from what Americans are used to.

Agriculture

A Farmer's Best Friend

This is a photo of a Thai farmers best friend. It is a water buffalo. The water buffalo is highly valued, especially in the Chieng Rai Province, in northern Thailand. The water buffalo is the Thai farmer's tractor. It allows him to grow on land that normally would be impossible.

Fish Farming

This is a photo of a man feeding his fish. During the rainy season, when the farmer's rice paddies are flooded, he grows fish. The fish eat insects and fertilize the soil. After the rainy season, the fish are harvested. A farmer can get twice the profit using this system.

Fishing the Inlets

This is a photo of an inlet in the Prachuab Khiri Khan Province at high tide. Notice the traps in the inlet. At low tide, the fishermen go out and retrieve the traps full of fish. This method allows the fishermen to save a lot of time, some even have other jobs.
