I got my B.A. at Duke University, class of 1979. My major area of study was marine biology. Duke has separate botany and zoology departments so strictly speaking you can't get a degree in biology. I had to do a special program that involved an " interdepartmental major. " Duke has a marine laboratory on the Carolina coast in Beaufort. I spent a semester and most of my summers there taking courses. It was a really wonderful opportunity. The Beaufort environs are also a truly beautiful stretch of coastline.
By the way, it was only in my junior year that the Duke basketball team became really good, coming in second in the NCAA championships. I have to admit that I'm not much of a sports fan, so I haven't really kept very close attention to their subsequent triumphs, although they always seem to be up there in the national rankings.
