I spent four and a half years living on the island of Pohnpei, in the Federated States of Micronesia working as a coastal resources management extension agent for Sea Grant Extension Service. My responsibilities spanned the whole of the FSM and I carried out projects in all the states. Much of my work concerned the development of coastal resource management plans for FSM states. I also developed a variety of public education materials, organized training workshops, and wrote and edited a newsletter. (Something I continue to do today for the program in Hawaii, with the newsletter PinPoint.) It was also during my time in Pohnpei that I became involved in the watershed management program that continues to inform my research interests.
