GIS and the military
Military analysts and cartographers use GIS in a variety of applications such as creating basemaps, assessing terrain, and aiding in tactical decisions. The examples below show a few of the military applications for GIS.

You can use GIS to

Create Standard Basemaps

A GIS can be used to store and display data needed as basemap data for other military applications.

In this example, the Military Topographic Institute of the Czech Republic uses the information in a GIS database to create a map showing contours, transportation routes, and cities. In addition, the map displays other information specific to the application or requesting organization.

Aid in Tactical Decisions

GIS is used by the military to aid their understanding of regional terrain and how it affects overall battlefield support.

These examples combine satellite imagery and GIS terrain data to illustrate potential landing site analysis, vehicular travel time, field of view, and line of site assessment for a given area.

Display Map Data and Aerial Photos

A GIS can display feature information stored as aerial photographs simultaneously.

The Military Topographic Institute of the Czech Republic uses the GIS data in conjunction with aerial photographs for Hradec Králové. The integration of the two data types creates a more realistic rendition of the area while clarifying specific features needed for navigation.
