Geography Undergraduate Program

Bachelor of Arts
  A Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in geography consists of 36 credit hours plus two years of college work in on foreign language or the equivalent as determined by the Department of Foreign Languages. Lower division requirements:

  • Fundamentals of Geography - GEOG 1000 - 3 credits or
    Introduction to Human Geography - 1020 - 3 credits,
  • Physical Geography: Climate and Waters - GEOG 1060 - 4 credits, and
  • Physical Geography: Soils and Landforms - GEOG 1070 - 4 credits,

If Geography 1030 is taken prior to a major declaration, then Geography 1070 and Geography 3510 must be taken to satisfy the core in physical geography. Geography 3510 in this case then also counts toward upper division physical requirements.

  Three upper division groups are required:

Group 1
  a. Physical (choose one of the following):

  • Meteorology - GEOG 3510 - 3 credits,
  • Geoarchaeology - GEOG 4040 - 3 credits,
  • Biogeography - GEOG 4100 - 3 credits,
  • Process Geomorphology - GEOG 4260 - 3 credits,
  • Climatology - GEOG 4320 - 3 credits,
  • Soil Genesis, Morphology and Classification - GEOG 4330 - 3 credits, and
  • Water Resources - GEOG 4340 - 3 credits.

  b. Human (choose two of the following):

  • Economic Geography - GEOG 3130 - 3 credits,
  • Political Geography - GEOG 3930 - 3 credits,
  • Conservation of Natural Resources - GEOG 4010 - 3 credits,
  • Urban Geography - GEOG 4120 - 3 credits,
  • Geography, Gender, and Work - GEOG 4150 - 3 credits,
  • The American Urban Landscape - GEOG 4160 - 3 credits, and
  • Urbanization in Developing Areas - GEOG 4900 - 3 credits.

Group 2
  Regional (choose one from a and one from b)
  a. (choose one of the following)

  • GEOG 3030 through 3240 - 3 credits,
  • Urbanization in Developing Areas - GEOG 4900 - 3 credits, or
  • Independent Research - GEOG 4600 - 3 credits;

  b. and (one of the following)

  • United States and Canada - GEOG 3330 - 3 credits,
  • Great Plains and Nebraska - GEOG 4230 - 3 credits,
  • Historical Geography of the United States - GEOG 4530 - 3 credits.

Group 3
  Techniques
  a. Cartography & GIS (both 3530 &3540 required)

  • Cartography and GIS - GEOG 3530 - 2 credits, and
  • Cartography and GIS Lab - GEOG 3540 - 2 credits.


  b. one of the following:

  • Aerial Photographic Interpretation - GEOG 2620 - 3 credits,
  • Quantitative Methods in Geography - GEOG 4020 - 3 credits,
  • Computer Mapping and Data Analysis - GEOG 4030 - 3 credits,
  • Geographic Information Systems - GEOG 4050 - 3 credits,
  • Field Methods in Geography and Geology - GEOG 4610 - 3 credits,
  • Environmental Remote Sensing - GEOG 4630 - 4 credits,
  • GIS-Science and Technology - GEOG 4660 - 4 credits, and
  • Internship in Environmental/Regional Planning/Earth Science - GEOG 4800 - 1-6 credits.

  One additional upper level course (3000- or 4000-level) from the three groups must be selected to complete this major.

Bachelor of Science
  Requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in geography are the same as for the B.A. except that (in lieu of a foreign language) the following courses are required:

  • Computer Science 1500, 1620, College of Information Science and Technology Core Course 1400, or other computer course by arrangement with an advisor.
  • Mathematics 1530, or Statistics 3000, or other statistics course by arrangement with an advisor.

  For student who wish more technical applications in geography, the department also offers, in addition to a general geography major, and undergraduate concentration in Geographic Information Processing within the Bachelor of Science Program. In order to receive a certificate for the special concentration, a student must include the following courses as part of or in addition to the 36 hour minimum in geography and 15 hours B.S. requirement: Geography 4030 and 4050; Math 1320, 1330, and 1950; and Computer Science 1610, and 1620, 1800 or 1840.

Advanced Writing Course
  English 2400 has been approved as the advanced writing course for geography majors.

Minor
  A minor in geography requires a minimum of 22-24 credit hours including 1000 or 1020, 1060, 1070, plus an additional four upper level courses under specific faculty advisement.
