Countries, People, and Cultures of Northern Africa
Countries, People, and
Cultures of Northern Africa are as diverse today
as they were a thousand years ago. Most of
the countries are very underdeveloped, with a strong emphasis on Agriculture,
and nomadic behavior.
The United Nations recognizes Northern Africa as six countries: Algeria,
Egypt, Morocco, Libya,
Sudan, and Tunisia are all Countries located
in the Northern Part of the African Continent.
The
educational map that some education facilities use to describe to students
can sometimes be misunderstood, due to the fact that Egypt is included in the Geography
of Northern Africa. Many students are
taught that Egypt is located
in the Middle East. This Map would be a great tool to pointing
out that Egypt is located in
the Middle East to the beginning Geography
student, or maybe elementary students.
Physical Environment of Northern Africa
The
National Weather Service Prediction Center
is the official center that the United States Government uses to monitor
weather all over the world. The site
shows loop, swing, infrared, and Doppler radar images of selected
countries. This particular part of the
site is of the Northern Africa region.
The Atlas Mountain
Range is the only mountains found in Africa. The Atlas Mountain Range can be found in Northwest Africa, and extends over 2, 400
kilometers. The mountains were created
over 300 million years ago by continental collisions, and are divided in 8 sub
ranges.
The Sahara Desert which is
located in Northern Africa. The Sahara Desert
is the largest Desert in the world (next to Antarctica), and is almost the size
of the United States. The age of the desert has been dated to
around 2.5 million years old. Temperatures in the Desert range from 58 degrees
Celsius to -6 degrees Celsius.
Agriculture in Northern Africa
Population and
food production go hand in hand in any society. At the present rate Northern
Africa will be a food secure area as long as the average calorie
intake or the stable population stays relatively the same. This web site discusses the food security of
the Region.
Climate change and
Agriculture in Northern Africa is depended
on one another. The impact of the
climate is a factor in how well the yields will be for that season. The prediction of Northern African Farmers
yields does not seem bright. This
website discusses Northern Africa’s climate in
relation to the agriculture success of the area.
Prospective on Crop production
in Northern Africa does not look good for the
future. Major crops and arable land in North Africa
are disappearing at an alarming rate.
The major crops are cereal grains, fruit, vegetables, sugar, nuts and
seeds. Africa’s
annual precipitation is low, so roughly only 26.4 percent of the land is arable
putting stain on the growers of the area.
