Nepal, a country small in area but with over 20 million people, is experiencing increasing pressure on its natural environment. This picture depicts a scene in the foothills of the Himalayas. The land in this hilly and forested region is being transformed to agricultural landuse. A part of the area has also been terraced, an indication of the steepness of the slopes. The foreground depicts a slope that is not as steep as that in the background. This part of the picture also includes a series of thatched roof structures, at least five, probably used for housing. At this point, more than half of the scene is still forested. Trees remain in areas of more severe slope especially near streams and areas of runoff. Reports from Nepal indicate that deforestation is continuing, accompanied by severe problems with soil erosion.
