Open Source Tools for Online Mapping - Part 1

Part 1: Installing MS4W and MapLab

  1. MapTools.org
  2. Download MapServer
  3. MapServer 1.0.1 (works with MapLab)
  4. Download MapLab 2.2
  5. Unzip into the top level of the C drive
  6. Get MapLab files in the right places
  7. Restart computer
  8. Check if the localhost address works in Explorer, with MapLab listed
  9. Go to: C:\ms4w\Apache\htdocs
  10. Rename "index.phtml" to "index2.phtml"
  11. Go to http://www.WhatIsMyIPaddress.com and note IP address
  12. In Notepad, create the following "index.htm" file:

    <html>
    <h1> This server belongs to 'your name' </h1>
    <h2> My IP address is: xxx.xx.xx.xx </h2>
    </html>

  13. Open Explorer and enter localhost
  14. Add links to four of your neighbors to the index.htm file:
    <a href="http:/xxx.xx.xx.xx"> Groucho's web server </a>
